The first
antlerless doe season in Pennsylvania was called a Female Deer season
and was held in 1923 and 1924 in select areas that had significant
crop damage. In 1925, the name was changed to Special Deer. The
1925 and 1926 licenses are identical. However, a 1925 license will
have a number under 6000. The next special deer license was issued
in 1928. Also, in 1928 a free special deer license was issued to
landowners that applied for one. It is of a different color than
the regular 1928. In 1930, two different colors were issued. A black
and white license was the standard issue. A red and white license
was issued to landowners. There is also three prototype or sample
licenses known for 1930. A 1930 lavender, grey, and blue are known
to exist. The lavender and grey reside in this collection. The blue
license is owned by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and is on display
at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area.
BEWARE OF RED/WHITE REPAINTS AND BLUE/WHITE REPAINTS.
It would
be seven years until a special deer season would be scheduled again.
In 1937, a season was set but after much controversy was canceled.
Licenses do exist in circulation. In 1943, a special deer season
was held in several counties. This license was cardboard -- unlike
the previous metal licenses. In 1946, the final special deer license
was sold. This license was also cardboard. The license in this collection
has a metal ear tag marked PA SPECIAL DEER. I have never seen another
metal tag.
